The excursion will take place on Friday, 16. September 2011 from 13:00 until approximately 19:00. You will be picked up at the conference site by a bus, which will bring you in a ride of about 75 minutes to the former Free Imperial Town of Goslar with an over-1000-year history. The program will start with a visit of the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz). The Saxon and Salic emperors established their largest and most secure palatinate here in the 11th century. For centuries it was the favoured seat of government in northern Germany and at the same time a centre of Christianity.
From the knoll upon which the Imperial Palace stands you can enjoy the view of the townscape with the steeples of the five large parish churches. From here you will in a guided tour explore the Old Town with the many crooked, narrow, cobble-stoned streets, half-timbered houses and churches. The Old Town of Goslar together with the Imperial Palace was named World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
The visit of the Imperial Palace and the city tour will take about 105 minutes and will end at the marketplace.
Afterwards, you can have coffee and cake in a restaurant in the city centre (included in the fee) and further explore the city on your own. A suggestion is to climb on the Market Church St. Cosmas and Damian and enjoy the impressive view over Goslar.
The return to Göttingen will again be by bus and you will be back in time for the conference dinner.
Please note that the program described here is only preliminary and we reserve the right, depending on circumstances (e.g. on the exact number of participants), to make minor modifications.
